DJ Scientist returns with another significant exploration into the realm of vinyl subculture. This time, the focus is on "Cloud Rock," a term invented by Scientist as a German equivalent to yacht rock. While classic rock featuring bands like Led Zeppelin had lost its appeal long ago, the sunny Westcoast sound emerged in mid-70s California. Today, soft rock and AOR are familiar territories for contemporary groove DJs. But what was happening in the German-speaking regions during that era? There was partial identification with the sun-soaked sound or the now-dubbed "yacht rock," albeit always with a unique flair. It was more about the wind, weather, clouds, and a touch of melancholy that manifested in both sound and lyrics.
The journey begins aptly with "Der Schläfer" (“The Sleeper”) by Gustly Lütjens, a track Scientist discovered a few years ago and popularized through his Discogs shop. Boasting a breezy blues rock groove the single now commands a nearly three-digit price tag. Continuing with a blend of the classic "Welche Farbe hat der Wind" and the widely known "Fühl dich frei" by Wolfsmond – again, a fitting choice for the "Cloud Rock" theme.
However, there are notably sunny moments in the mix as well – arguably best encapsulated by the band Ara Pacis with their track "To The Westcoast," found on a privately pressed LP from 1979. Scientist licensed the track in 2019 for his label The Artless Cuckoo (now: The Outer Edge). Similarly, the band Imagination from Düsseldorf captures the coastal vibe with "California"; their former vocalist Roger Mork had ties to the USA.
However, the mix also includes pieces that defy easy classification. Is Malör's track "Bali" Balearic pop rock or perhaps modern soul? A downtempo section towards the mix's end is also not easily associated with the term "yacht rock." This reveals a distinct "German" style, borrowing from blues rock, funk, disco, jazz, and more, yet distinctly separate from the classic rock and 70s "krautrock."
"Dancing Under Clouds – This Is Cloud Rock Vol. 1" presents 33 mostly unheard tracks expertly interwoven by DJ Scientist, offering a fascinating and even danceable listening experience that should not be missed.

DJ Scientist ist zurück mit einem weiteren kleinen Denkmal für die Schallplatten-Subkulturforschung. Diesmal heisst das Thema: „Cloud Rock“ oder auf deutsch eben „Wolkenrock“. Es geht aber weniger um das schlechte Wetter, sondern mehr um eine Stimmung. Während der Classic Rock um Größen wie Led Zeppelin längst an Reiz verloren hatte, bahnte sich Mitte der 70er im Californien der sonnige Westcoast-Sound seinen Weg. Auch Soft Rock und AOR sind längst keine Fremdwörter mehr für den Groove-DJ von heute. Aber was gab es im deutschsprachigen Raum in der Zeit? Konnte man sich mit dem sonnendurchfluteten Sound oder dem „Yachtrock“, wie man ihn inzwischen auch nennt, identifizieren? Teilweise sicherlich, jedoch stets auf eigene, unverwechselbare Weise. Es waren wohl eher der Wind, das Wetter, die Wolken und eine Prise deutsche Melancholie, die sich sowohl im Sound als auch in den Texten bemerkbar machten.
Los geht es passend mit „Der Schläfer“ von Gustly Lütjens. Ein Titel, den Scientist vor einigen Jahren entdeckte und später über seinen Discogs-Shop bekannt machte. Inzwischen müsste man für die Single schon fast einen 3-stelligen Betrag hinlegen, die mit einem fluffigen Blues Rock Groove überzeugt. Mit einem „Blend“ des Klassikers „Welche Farbe hat der Wind“ mit dem allseits bekannten „Fühl dich frei“ von Wolfsmond geht es weiter – auch hier könnte der Text kaum passender sein für das Thema „Cloud Rock“.
Richtig sonniges gab es aber auch – am besten und authentischsten traf es wohl die Band Ara Pacis mit dem Titel „To The Westcoast“, ein Stück, das auf einer privat gepressten LP aus dem Jahr 1979 zu finden ist. Scientist lizenzierte 2019 den Titel für sein Label The Artless Cuckoo (jetzt: The Outer Edge). Aber auch die Band Imagination aus Düsseldorf liefert mit „California“ das Feeling der Küste, der damalige Sänger Roger Mork hatte Verbindungen in die USA.
Der Mix enthält jedoch auch Stücke, die sich nur schwer einordnen lassen. Ist das Stück "Bali" der Band Malör nun Balearic Pop Rock oder eher Modern Soul? Ein Downtempo-Part gegen Ende des Mixes lässt sich ebenfalls schwerlich mit dem Begriff "Yachtrock" verbinden. Hier und an anderen Stellen zeigt sich ein gewisser eigener "deutscher" Stil, der Elemente aus Blues Rock, Funk, Disco, Jazz und vielem mehr aufgreift, dabei aber klar von klassischem Rock und dem "Krautrock" der 70er abweicht.
Mit "Dancing Under Clouds – This Is Cloud Rock Vol. 1" präsentiert DJ Scientist insgesamt 33 Stücke, die größtenteils noch völlig unbekannt sind und dennoch faszinierend und sogar tanzbar miteinander verwoben sind. Ein wolkig-sonniges Hörerlebnis, dem sich niemand entziehen sollte.
